About Us

In 1957, the National Meteorological Training School was established at Oshodi, Lagos, Nigeria, to train Class IV Meteorological Technicians. The School was part of the then Nigerian Department of Meteorological Services (presently Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet).

In 1964, a Regional Meteorological Training Centre (RMTC) was established in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, to train Class lll and Class Il Meteorological Technicians. These two training Centres were merged in 1975 and designated as Meteorological Research and Training Institute (MRTI) at Oshodi, Lagos, Nigeria to train Classes IV, lll and II (now BIP-MT).

In 1994, the Department of Meteorology (now Department of Meteorology and Climate Science) at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria was also designated as the University component of the RMTC in Nigeria. The Meteorological Research and Training Institute, Oshodi and the Department of Meteorology, Federal University of Technology, Akure, was
then recognized as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Training Centre for the West African Countries’ sub-region. Space for physical expansion is becoming an issue af the MRTI, Lagos, so in May 2019, an extension of the Centre was officially Commissioned in Katsina, Nigeria, by the Honourable Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika. The WMO Regional Training Centre (RTC), under the auspices of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (a division under the Directorate of Research and Training), statutorily funded by it, is responsible for the training of Meteorological Personnel from Nigeria, English-speaking West African Countries and other African countries.
